Twentynine Palms, San Bernardino County
Twentynine Palms is named for the fan palms counted at the Oasis of Mara by a survey party in 1855. The oasis now sits beside the headquarters of Joshua Tree National Park, whose north entrance is a few miles up the road. North of town, the Marine Corps training center opened in 1952 and covers more ground than any other Marine base.
